Subgrid surface connectivity for storm surge modeling

Subgrid modeling to account for unresolved topography within the context of shallow water equations relies on use coarse grids computational efficiency. However, excessively can lead artificial cross flows between hydrologically disconnected areas separated by physical barriers smaller than grid size. An approach based introducing cell and edge clones, consisting connected groups pixels in each cell, is able systematically remove such flows. Such an considers that subgrid permanently divide flow among clones effectively restrict a predetermined path. In this work, simple algorithm, along with overtopping formula, proposed extend clone scenario which are allowed be further split merged as needed, depending surface elevation during given runtime. The algorithm intended accommodating possibility being inundated no-longer dividing extreme event. performance demonstrated through series idealized more realistic test cases, showing considerable improvements over existing methodologies.
